Some simple animals can rebuild an entire body from a piece. Others produce a new individual as a small outgrowth. Both depend on cell division and organised development, but they begin in different ways.

When Planaria or Hydra is cut into pieces under suitable conditions, many pieces can form complete organisms. Specialised cells divide repeatedly to produce a mass of cells. Cells in this mass then differentiate into the various tissues required, and those tissues develop in the correct arrangement.

Why Regeneration Is Not Always Reproduction

Regeneration may repair damage, and some organisms can produce new individuals after accidental division. However, most do not normally depend on being cut to reproduce. The biological context matters: restoration of a lost part is repair, while formation of an independent organism can have a reproductive outcome.

Budding In Hydra

In Hydra, repeated cell division at a specific site produces an outgrowth called a bud. The bud develops a mouth and tentacles while attached to the parent. When mature, it detaches and lives independently. Unlike fragmentation, the parent body does not first break into pieces.
