The Hierarchical Nature of Classification
“Classification is nature’s address system, only with considerably harder spelling.”

An ordinary address begins with a broad region and ends with a precise location. Biological classification works in a comparable way. “Animal” identifies an enormous group, while a species name identifies a much narrower group. Each step downward reduces the number of organisms and increases the number of shared characteristics.
The principal hierarchy is Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species. Every lower category is contained within the category above it. Members of one genus belong to the same family, order, class, phylum and kingdom, but members of one kingdom need not share the close similarities found within a genus.

Scientific Naming — The Binomial System
The same organism may have different common names in different languages and regions. A tiger may be called by several local names, making international communication uncertain. Binomial nomenclature gives each recognised organism a universal two-part scientific name.
Binomial nomenclature is the universal system in which the scientific name of an organism contains two words representing its genus and species.
Carolus Linnaeus introduced this naming system in the eighteenth century. In Panthera tigris, Panthera is the genus and tigris identifies the species. Panthera tigris and Panthera leo share the genus Panthera because they possess several closely related characteristics, while the second word distinguishes tiger from lion.
Rules for Writing the Scientific Names
A scientific name contains two parts. The genus comes first and begins with a capital letter. The species word comes second and begins with a lowercase letter. Both words are written in italics when printed. When handwritten, each word is underlined separately.

Do not capitalise both words, reverse their order, write only the species word or omit italics in print. The complete name and its formatting communicate the organism’s identity consistently.
Ready to Go Beyond
The five-kingdom system organised diversity more effectively than earlier arrangements, but it did not fully explain every relationship. Improved microscopes and genetic studies allowed researchers to compare organisms using DNA. Greater similarity in inherited material can provide evidence of common ancestry.
Carl Woese proposed a three-domain system containing Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya. This system revealed that microscopic prokaryotic life contains deeper diversity than the single kingdom Monera suggested. Bacteria and Archaea represent distinct domains, while organisms with eukaryotic cells enter Eukarya.
Threads of Curiosity
The continued revision of classification demonstrates how science progresses. Aristotle’s grouping suited observations available in his time. Microscopes revealed microorganisms and cell structures; staining techniques improved cellular observation; genetic studies later revealed inherited relationships. A changing system is therefore evidence of scientific reasoning responding to stronger evidence.
