What Happens When an Egg Is Not Fertilised

When fertilisation does not happen, the uterus calmly resets for another cycle.

The uterus prepares before it knows whether fertilisation will occur. Its inner lining becomes thicker and richer in blood vessels, creating a place where a developing group of cells could implant. If no zygote arrives, maintaining this lining is unnecessary, so the body begins a new cycle.

An unfertilised egg remains viable for about a day and then degenerates. The prepared uterine lining breaks down and leaves the body through the vagina with some blood. This process is menstruation, or a period, and commonly lasts about three to seven days.

Menstruation is the shedding of the uterine lining, along with some blood, when pregnancy has not begun.

The menstrual cycle includes more than bleeding. During the early part, the lining begins rebuilding and an egg matures in an ovary. Ovulation releases the mature egg. Afterwards, the lining becomes thicker and rich in blood vessels. If fertilisation and implantation do not occur, the lining starts breaking down and the next menstruation begins.

Cycles commonly range from about 21 to 35 days and are often described using a 28-day example. In that example, ovulation is shown near day 14. It is incorrect to claim that ovulation always occurs exactly on day 14 because cycle length differs among individuals and may vary from one cycle to another. Menstrual cycles usually begin during puberty, often between about 10 and 14 years of age, and continue until menopause, which commonly occurs around the age of 50.

What determines a baby’s biological sex?

In the simplified chromosome pattern presented here, females have XX sex chromosomes and males have XY. Every egg contributes an X chromosome. Sperm carry either an X or a Y chromosome. An X-bearing sperm with the egg produces XX, while a Y-bearing sperm with the egg produces XY.

This shows why the chromosome contributed by the sperm determines whether the combination is XX or XY. The mother does not determine or control which sperm reaches the egg, and blaming a mother for the biological sex of a child has no scientific basis.

Hygiene practices to follow during menstruation (period)

Menstruation is a normal sign of reproductive functioning and should not be treated as shameful. Suitable products include sanitary pads, tampons, menstrual cups and properly maintained reusable products. The choice depends on comfort, access and correct use.

Wash the genital area regularly with water and avoid practices that disturb the natural bacterial balance. Wash hands with soap and water before and after changing a product. Change pads about every four to six hours, or more often during heavy flow. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for reusable products and ensure reusable pads are completely dry before use.

Used disposable products should be wrapped and placed in an appropriate bin rather than flushed down a toilet. Clean practices protect the user and prevent blocked sanitation systems or environmental litter.

Accurate information, access to clean products and respectful conversation allow students to manage menstruation safely. Questions about severe pain, unusually heavy bleeding or major changes should be discussed with a trusted adult and a qualified health professional.

A typical diagram is not a fixed timetable

A 28-day cycle is a teaching example. Cycle length, ovulation timing and bleeding duration naturally vary. The diagram should not be used to declare an exact day for every person.
