How are Various Parts Connected in Our Body?

Connective Tissue

A drop of blood is fluid, a bone is hard, and the tip of the nose is flexible. At first they seem unrelated. They belong to the same broad tissue group because each connects, supports or transports between parts of the body. Their different consistencies come mainly from the material surrounding their cells.

The matrix is the material surrounding the cells of a connective tissue. It may be fluid, soft, jelly-like or hard.

A watery matrix makes blood suitable for transport. A mineral-rich solid matrix makes bone strong. A softer matrix gives cartilage flexibility and cushioning. The matrix therefore helps determine what each connective tissue can do.

Daily events reveal the functions of blood. A small cut releases red blood and later forms a clot. An infected region can become red and swollen. During running, breathing and blood flow increase because active muscles need more oxygen.

Red Blood Cells survive for about four months and are replaced regularly. During physical activity, muscles use oxygen more rapidly, so breathing becomes faster and blood flow increases. White Blood Cells gather where infection occurs, while platelets help seal an injured vessel.

Touching an elbow reveals a hard structure, folding the ear reveals a flexible one, moving the fingers while touching the forearm reveals force transmitted over a distance, and moving the knee reveals that a joint is prevented from travelling beyond a safe range. These observations point to bone, cartilage, tendons and ligaments.

Bone has a rigid matrix containing calcium and phosphorus compounds. This provides strength, support and protection. Cartilage has a softer, jelly-like matrix. It keeps structures flexible and cushions the ends of bones, reducing shock where movement occurs.

A tendon connects muscle to bone. When the muscle contracts, the tendon transmits the pulling force to the bone. A ligament connects bone to bone. It stabilises a joint, limits excessive movement and helps prevent dislocation.
