Types of Joints

Shoulders spin, knees hinge, and the skull wisely refuses to participate.

Wave an arm in a circle, bend a knee, turn the head from side to side and then try to move the bones of the skull. The bones are all hard, but their connections are designed differently. Joint structure determines whether movement occurs in many directions, one main direction, around a pivot or not at all.

Ball and Socket Joint

At the shoulder, the rounded top of the upper arm bone fits into a shallow hollow of the shoulder bone. This ball and socket arrangement allows forward, backward, sideways and circular movements. Together with the collarbone, the shoulder forms the shoulder girdle that connects the arm to the skeleton.

Hinge Joint

A hinge joint bends and straightens mainly in one direction, much like a door hinge. The elbow and knee are examples. At the knee, the kneecap provides additional protection to the joint.

Pivot Joint

A pivot joint permits rotation around a central connection. The skull is connected to the backbone through such a joint, allowing the head to turn from side to side as when signalling “no”.

Fixed Joints

Fixed joints connect bones without permitting movement. The flat bones of the skull are joined firmly, producing a hard case that protects the brain, eyes and ears. Lack of movement is an advantage here because protection is more important than flexibility.

Problem

The vertebral column, or backbone, extends from the base of the skull and is made of a series of small bones called vertebrae. It supports the body and helps us stand upright. A cartilage disc between neighbouring vertebrae acts as a cushion and permits flexibility, allowing bending and twisting while protecting the spinal cord inside.

Twelve pairs of ribs form the rib cage. The cage protects the heart and lungs but is not completely rigid. Ribs attach to the spine at the back and to the breast bone at the front through flexible cartilage. This arrangement allows the rib cage to expand and contract during breathing, changing the space in the chest so air can move into and out of the lungs.

Bridging Science and Society

Correct posture, suitable nutrition, regular exercise and yoga help maintain strong bones, fit muscles and flexible joints. Physical postures, breathing and mindful practice can improve flexibility and posture while helping the body avoid stiffness.
